They aren't selling hardware platforms now, any more than you see Linus 
Torvalds on street corners selling TiVos.

T-Mobile is selling hardware platforms based on Android. Eventually 
non-carriers will be selling hardware platforms based on Android. They 
need to be leading edge of any marketing efforts.

It is possible that Google or the Open Handset Alliance could do some 
general branding marketing, a la the old "Intel Inside" campaign, though 
it is unclear how well that one worked for Intel.
