A (poorly configured) tablet with 1024 pixels across could have a "scale factor" of 2 and would therefore be 2048dp, so it COULD be "correct", strictly speaking. Have you checked to see what the scale factor is?
Are you drawing your screen using absolute pixel coordinates? That would be a no-no. If you're using absolute layout with dp coordinates, then if the tablet is screwed up and really is 1024dp wide, then sure, things are going to be broken. But if you're asking it to place at px offsets, then that's the problem.
