Thanks for the responses.
0. I'm actually using OS X 10.2.6, not 10.2.5 as I first reported.
1. Great suggestion, Don, but no go. I compiled and ran apache 2.0.46, and it seems to behave the same as apache 1. So close in every regard that I had to check the server software reported by 'ab' to make sure I was hitting the right port. I'm still suspicious.
2. I applied Dossy's patch to aolserver 2.0beta8, and it does _not_ fix the problem. However, it does seem to make aolserver fail much more gracefully, i.e. there are now no runs with 100% errors, and the number of errors increases smoothly as I increase the concurrency. Previously, using a "low" concurrency like 15, I was seeing some test runs have near 100% errors (in fact, on these runs, 'ab' consistently couldn't even figure out the server software), and some with a handful of errors (3,8,12, etc).
3. I will send Nathan my files.
