I think the real problem may arise from this:
distinctive characters in the Penobscot font set
Quite a few folks created fonts for the ][ series computers; it was comparatively simple. Unless there is a corresponding Penobscot font for a modern OS it seems to me that this will need to be mapped and recreated before any translated output would be of any more use than, say, a letter in Times displayed in Wingdings.
My son has ][, ][e, GS, and a number of older Macs available. Given the nature of your project (pretty fascinating!) if you wish you can secure courier the disks here and we'd copy, then migrate, the data. I might be able to recreate the specialized font as well. No charge.
I'm sure others on the list would happily provide similar services.
