: I can VIVIDLY remember buying an EMPTY RamFactor from Applied Engineering : for $145 (I think; the price of the bare card isn't vidid, but wait...) in : 1989.
I have an AE catalog in PDF, and when I see those prices, I cringe. In fact, I was one who thought only of cost at the time that 8-bit computers were the big thing, and owned instead of one Apple II, a whole room full of Atari. Wish I had bought one or 2 Apple IIs instead, looking back on it. : Then I went to the local memory vendor in San Diego, to a place that was : famous for having the best prices nationwide, (but its name escapes me - : was it The Memory Exchange?) and bought 32 (that's thirty-two) individual : memory chips for $332. I built a 2 MB extender ram board, external for an 800xl, and the 1 Mb chips cost me over $300. These were used. :o( : In other words, I bought a 1-meg ram card for $477 for an Apple //e. Doesn't surprise me at all. : So when I can now buy a card with 4 times the memory and 1/10th the cost, : well, that makes me VERY happy. So happy, in fact, that I am now buying a : GS, a machine that I've never personally owned before. Bill, as soon as it : arrives, you've got another customer. I'm glad to be able to make them for that little. And, FYI, I don't get much more than beer money from these things. : And as to why to have 8-megs? If I were to have that card, I'd make a hell : of a big ramdisk along with all that workspace RAM. In the meantime, a : 4-meg will do nicely. Yes, and with the right buffering software, a CD player would not hesitate at all with that much ram. Also could play MP3's again with the right software. Glad to see someone can come up with reason to have more ram.
