trouble now. Even when it gets to a new page and starts loading, it will
get stuck midway. I wait and wait and finally ESC; then on occasion
pressing R will start it loading again, but only to get stuck again.
Finally it goes to 'Arachne load error'. A couple times, it loaded the
first page successfully, then I followed a link successfully, then entered a
new URL and went there okay . . . then it stalled again. Usually any
attempt to load more than the first page or second page, either URL-name or
IP number, results in 'Arachne load error'. It's as if it loses track of
the DNS. Perhaps in this area Compuserve is redirecting requests in a way
that Arachne can't follow????<<

Steve,

Arachne has had a problem of "going to sleep" while loading a page. I had
that problem really bad prior to 1.48. It would take me anywhere from 10 to
30 minutes to load www.enr.com (without prodding). Then, for some reason I
suspected that I had an unrelated problem with Arachne and reloaded it over
my existing Arachne and, voila!, the "sleep" problem went away. Another
thing that I have found that causes Arachne to "hang" is when the cache fills
up. Michael P. has set a limit on 256 items in the cache and when it reaches
that limit, Arachne just stops! Clearing the cache (and CACHE.IDX) with the
F8 key will usually get Arachne zipping along again. On one of my computers
I have Cache and CACHE.IDX on a resizeable RAM drive that clears every time I
leave Arachne; on another computer, I hit F8 after I hang up. The "sleep"
problem has not really been a problem with 1.6b1.

Hope this helps.

P.S. BTW, I did a "reverse search" (using SelectPhone) on the phone number
that you had for Compuserve in your ARACHNE.CFG, but couldn't come up with
that exact number. The closest number that I could come up with was
213-688-7356 (or something similar) that was a business number in Los
Angeles. Are you accessing Compuserve thru another phone system?
