Hello fellow Arachnids:

Today I attempted to sign up for Freewwweb. For the purposes of doing
the sign up process I used an internet work station at the public library
It was a Window$ 98 machine running Internet Exploder, version 4.

The reason why I did not try to sign up by using Arachne is that the login
screens use https, being secure sockets not supported by Arachne.

After I finished entering all the requested information, I clicked on
the "SUBMIT" button. Then the machine started to download a file. I was
queried whether I wanted to save the download to disk or view the file on
screen or cancel. Saving to disk was not an option. The library does not
allow patrons to download anything. I clicked on "view the file on-screen".
Nothing happened. Then I clicked on "cancel" and received an
"internal error" message. I don't think I succeeded in completing the login
procedure. Anyway, I tried all the settings on my machine at home and could
not log on. My modem dialed and connected. It started going through its
protocol and handshaking thing and I was immediately disconnected.

The Freewwweb website says that there is nothing to download. My
experience indicates that this is not true. I can't imagine what might have
been on that file I was supposed to have downloaded and saved to disk. All
the setup information I needed is supplied by the website. Does anyone know
what I missed by not receiving the download? I thought the download might
have contained just some useless information about special setup
instructions for WIM 95 users.

P.S. During the sign-up procedure I was asked what operating system I would
use. There were three to select from. WIN 95, WIN 98, and Mac OS. I was
very surprised that Linux was not listed. The Freewwweb is supposedly
designed especially for Linux users. I selected WIN 95, although my actual
intention was to use DOS of course. Very strange signup procedure.
