I had never had a browser on my own computer before finding and using
Arachne so I had almost no experience with Windows browsers. I was on
Compuserve at the time (1997?) and using their proprietary DOS access
program (DOSCIM). I think I only had a 386sx/16 w/1 meg RAM at the
time. Even after acquiring my 486 with the ability to run Windows
effectively, the IE version my ISP provided had a script with it so I
assumed that that was how it was connecting. It may still do it that
way, but I can't really say I know for sure. Back then (1997) maybe
ISPs that did not support PAP/CHAP were more common and if that is
not the case now, you may be right about making PAP/CHAP the default
login protocol. I wonder if the ISP business community has an
association to represent their industry, such as other businesses
have? If they did, it might be interesting or usefull to contact them
and see if they know how predominant the various login protocols are
in their industry.
