(Linux doesn't care how many char in extension)

My man.conf is in /etc.  Have a look there.
You're using a mini-distro, aren't you?
Perhaps it didn't install man pages?

Free form.  No extension is necessary.  
Or you can use 2 or 3 or 4 extensions.

* = executable        @ = linked file

Colors are configurable.  On my system:
green = executable     light blue = linked file
dark blue = directory
