I run DV quite often.  It is a pretty stable program, but it is difficult
getting enough conventional memory free to run programs under it.  You
really need to work through your autoexec.bat and config.sys carefully,
perhaps using several configurations to get it clear enough even to run
some configurations of WordPerfect 5.1 (I am thinking of when you run it
with the ttfont ad-in which takes additional conventional memory.  
Arachne also takes up enough conventional memory to make it difficult to
run under DV.  I would like very much to be able to run things in the
background, but even more importantly to be able to cut and paste between
programs.  DV doesn't do that easily-it does it, but at a cost of
conventional memory.
