Deleting Mail from Inbox

     Anyone got advice on "deleting a message from the
     Inbox of Insight" ?
 
     The Arachne mail instructions say, press Shift-Enter
     (to mark the message).  Then at the bottom of the
     screen it says "to delete press DEL"
 
     Doing this, on numerous messages, does not delete a
     single message.
 
     In the Hotkeys, a note says this function is not
     functional in an "icon interface".  How do you get 
     out of an "icon interface"?
 
     Or is there any other way of deleting a bunch of mail,
     without having to go to the read mode for each message,
     then Trash the message?
