Yes, I used to run Netscape this way all the time.
However, when I experiemented running it under icewm
(on the same computer), I was surprised to find that
there was no deterioration in performance.  In fact, 
Netscape seems slightly faster under icewm, and it's
definitely more stable.  Moreover, icewm provides a 
ton of additional functionality.

Sure.  In fact, I'm pretty sure you can run Emacs 
from the CLI (without X).

Yeah, the Mozilla people have gone totally overboard.
They are trying to create a universal platform, not just 
a browser.  A stripped down, browser-only variant is 
available.  I think it's called Galleon or something 
like that.

Same for Linux.  Lynx, links and w3m all run very
well in 8meg RAM.  You've even got room to run
them in an X window (with icewm).
