I tried a series of fixes from the many suggestions to get Arachne to work
for me. All still to no avail. The error message I get is still the same.
I saw that Arachne had produced no PPP.logs, which it would have if
epppd.exe had executed. I tried to execute eppd.exe in dos, with the modem
off, and I got the same error message I get in my best Arachne performance.

This told me that whatever epppd.exe needs to connect is flawed.

Below, you said that the PPP software might not find the modem. I am on a
"Non-standard serial port" on this computer. The orginal arachne.cfg file I
sent was identical but from a different machine with different serial and
COMM connections.

The contents of pppdrc.cfg is pasted below: (with password changed)
 --------
9600
irq 5
base 0x2f8
modem
crtscts
asyncmap 0
namsrv 207.217.126.81
namsrv 207.217.120.82
user "ekrug"
passwd "not_really"
 -----------
I am on an external modem on what would be COMM 2, but this computer wants
IRQ 5 and not 3 for COMM 2. The machine is a HP, Vectra XU Pentium 90c,
with a built in DB 9 pin serial port and built in mouse connector. I am
using a second serial port from an expansion card with a DB 25 pin
connector.
IRQ 5 is assigned to LPT2, but MSD doesn't detect it as being active. Modem
Doctor detects the modem on IRQ 5, at 2f8.

Tomorrow, I will get an adaptor to let me connect to the build in DB9 serial
port. Hopefully this will resolve it.
Thanks
Ed

Now on to the other stuff.

Hmmm.
All I can think of now is the old "Hole in the comports problem".
i.e. maybe the PPP software can't find the modem that the dialer was
just using - but I see you are using COMM 1. That CAN'T be a problem.

There is one more file that might help.
Would you please post a copy of pppdrc.cfg ?
