Are you perchance using Smartdrv and delayed writes ?
That would be MY first choice for culprit - although I personally
have incorrectly blamed it before when it really was Arachne that
deleted my Netscape Bookmarks. :(
Now that I think of it, there could also be some connection between
delayed writes and all the farkled Arachne.cfgs.
Just guessing, as usual. <g>
