As you know, this is a hardware problem.  I don't think it can be fixed
by means of a software solution.  Maybe the contact surfaces in your
little button switches have corroded, or maybe they have collected some
moisture and dust.  You can get a little spray can of "contact cleaner" at
Radio Shack and other stores where they sell electronics supplies.  The
spray can comes with a long narrow hollow plastic tube to stick in the
nozzle so you can spray the stuff into hard to access places.  I have
used this type of product.  Sometimes it works wonders and sometimes it
doesn't help at all.  It certainly won't hurt to try it.  Good luck!
