Apparently the modem suddenly disconnected for some unknown reason
and then it resumed an "off hook" condition, after which it
commenced to dial some number. I didn't want to wait to see what
happens. I was afraid that my computer might connect with some bad
guy's evil system. Before I hit the panic button I hit <ALT X> but
I got no response. I didn't think of hitting <ALT H> at the time,
so I just reached for the major panic button.
