from L.D. Best:

I don't think what Bill has done is adequate, considering ... however,
he sponsors about $1,000,000 in scholarships every year, he has pledged
tens of millions to other types of charities -- and is paying it as
pledged, etc etc etc (After all, if he were a country, he'd be the
4th richest country in the world.)

It is because of the good press Gates can buy that the Congress and
the court system continue to let him get away with murder -- murder
of companies, concepts, free market, etc.

That is what I was speaking of ...

However, there is additional that you brought to mind: In the eyes of
the ignorant of the world, Bill Gates and Microsoft are responsible for
what the internet has become, WWW, and all the "good things we can now
  do with computers."

Just because I don't agree doesn't mean that the feeling isn't there.

I've wondered if Bill Gates' philanthropy was honest, or if it was a
public-relations ploy to buy favor with the government. It sure seems to pay
off. Having to worry whether a certain hardware item works with non-Windows
does not make me a fan of Bill Gates. I think of Bill Gates as Bill S. Gates,
where S stands for Slobodan or Saddam, take your pick.

Some MS software carries license restrictions prohibiting criticism of
Microsoft, and Front Page could not be used to produce a Web site putting
Microsoft in a bad light.

WWW is a mixed blessing with all the gymnastics such as Java, Javascript,
Shockwave, even frames, making me wish they had stayed with Gopher.
