There are some features of AIE that just won't work with the Mid Tier (one reason BMC still needs to ship the User Tool until AIE had been replaced [by AI]). I do see to remember this function working form Mid Tier though.
What I have seen is the process in the set fields action that runs the command on the server uses the stored password from the configuration and with the currently logged in user's Username when building the command. The run process fails because of an authentication issue. Maybe turn on User logging on the server to verify you don't see a failed login attempt each time you press the button. User logging has helped me troubleshoot some odd AIE behaviors in the past.
