I just verified (logged in as the AIE service account) that I can click buttons that call aiexfer (start/stop/refresh) without error in the MT (7.6.04 SP1). Definitely make sure you are logging in as the AR account AIE is configured to use for all of its processing.
AH!!! One feature we encounter early on... Try clicking the Close button in the upper right corner (you may have to go to the the Data Exchanges page; that is where I always did it from anyways). The AIE service account's password gets hashed in a form. There was an issue where this password would become incorrect and clicking the Close button set it back to what it should be. I never understood what the Close button had to do with setting the password but it works.
