Hmm.... (uh, please avoid top posting) so it sounds like the issue is
caused by the messagelabs servers which, for some reason suddenly
drop the connection; in such a case WHATEVER SMTP server will
just requeue the message and retry sending until reaching the retry
limit... which I think is what's happening in your case; now, the real
point is... WHY are messagelabs servers doing so ? I wonder if they
are using some kind of "nolisting" approach to reduce the amount of
junk their servers process, that may explain the "drop" but in such a
case, a retry toward another MX (IP/host) should go through (or get
a regular reject) - as for nolisting (or MX sandwich which is a tweak)
if you aren't familiar with it, have a look at http://nolisting.org/ - at 
any
rate, if this is the case, there isn't so much you can do about this
issue... aside from setting up things so that, email going to domains
using messagelabs will be sent to your ISP "smarthost" so delivery
attempts/retries will be handled by those servers :)
