Wouldn't this sorry FXO state of affairs open the door for a unique  
service from the local TELCO.  The TELCO could offer a PSTN/DSL  
product that offered a pair of PSTN DID's and those same DID's  
connected via SIP via private IP addresses on the DSL side.

The TELCO could invest in very good quality FXO/SIP hardware, the  
lifeline PSTN is still available, and the private DSL/SIP would  
connect to the LAN side of your network.

A cool product if they could get it through the government regulators  
at a reasonable price.
