Thanks;  I changed the file /etc/inittab but still the same results. Is
there another place to change it?

If you're using the standard i586 image, there is no support for a 
console on the serial port.  You would need to edit the inittab file and 
add support for a console on /dev/ttyS0.

You should be able to ssh into the box if you know the address.
