John, I haven't specifically used the HP thin clients. I know others in here have.
I have several systems in the field based on net5501 and VIA systems and don't have the same problems that you are experiencing. I'd like to help you fix this, but I don't know that I've seen some of the details that people like Lonnie have asked for. Namely, we need the exact contents of your astlinux-trunk-####.run.conf file and which SVN number you're trying to run (1549 is pretty old). If you could also paste the output from fdisk -l /dev/hdX (where hdX is likely hda or hdc) and mount? Which image do you need to test? The generic i586 image?
