You are correct in your understanding, but if your "mount" shows  
unionfs as "ro" then you have a problem and it won't work.

Depends if there is enough memory, but usually yes.

Unless you have some custom image build, I would start again using  
Darrick's latest images:
http://www.djhsolutions.com/astlinux/

rebuild your hda2 partition and use "genunion /dev/hda2".

Then see if unionfs if mounted "rw".
