Looks like there are no partitions defined ..?
I thought it should be something like /dev/sdd1
That is all handled by dd?
Once runnix boot loader is installed then, assuming there is room, once
can add partitions as needed.
It all somehow just works, though it took me a while, not being very
familiar with much of this.

OK, I get the idea for the boot loader. I followed the instructions for the
'quick' install with dd but I don't see the partition created. Am I missing
something? I have tried removing and reinserting the CF card.

Kevin,
Please look at the instructions here. The images are in runnix format
(basically they are squashfs images that need to be loaded by the runnix
boot loader. This page will explain how to do that.
http://www.astlinux.org/node/28
Once you've done that, you copy the contents of the tar.gz into the 'os'
directory, edit the astlinux-xxx.run.conf file appropriately and boot.
Future updates involve placing new files in that 'os' directory. These new
updates allow you to update a system without removing the CF at all.

Use the net5501 images. Those have serial support and what you need for
the ALIX boards.

Thanks for the links Lonnie. I had thought that the Generic images
weren't
natively set up to support the serial console of the ALIX?

Try the "geni586" images, Darrick has some here:

For example:
