A couple months ago I did offer a change to ntpd.init to address this issue... ntpd.init snippet found here: http://lonnie.abelbeck.com/share/ntpd_start.txt I believe I have tried all the permutations, Static IP, DHCP IP, numeric NTPd IP, name NTPd IP, Static DNS, etc. The delay is anywhere from 1 sec to 3 minutes, depending on the network error and configuration. --- Now, given that, I did not incorporate this fix/test in my personal builds for the simple reason that without a network connection at startup you will probably have to reboot to get things working anyway. Using unionfs, a person can 'edit' their /etc/init.d/ntpd file to test the above fix... just remember to delete /oldroot/mnt/asturw/etc/ init.d/ntpd if you update to a newer version later.
