We distribute those for two reasons:

1)  We want to cut down on transcoding (if it's even possible for you
to transcode G729)
2)  We want you to be able to use G729 even without the G729 module

  Most people don't realize you can have a very functional Asterisk
system using G729 without the G729 codec installed.  All it takes is a
little configuration.  I haven't used a G729 codec on an AstLinux
system in quite some time.
