This is really interesting, I'll always assumed that if g729 rtp audio is
terminated to asterisk then a g729 license is required.

Thinking about this would my assumption below be collect.

In all the below scenarios I'm only interested in the g729 licensing associated
to Asterisk, I'm assuming the connected device has the appropriated g729
implementation and licensing

Scenarios

1. G729 RTP call is terminated to asterisk for AA or voicemail

1.1. Audio files are encoded in g729 format - no transcoding required,
therefore no g729 licence is required

1.2. Audio files are encoded in g711 (alaw/ulaw) or GSM etc, - transcoding to
g729 is required therefore a g729 license would be required

2. IAX2 trunk transits asterisk to another IAX2 trunk

1.1. Both trunks negotiate g729 therefore the audio RTP is passed through
asterisk without transcoding, do we surmise that in this case no g729 licence
is required?

1.2. One trunk negotiates g729 and the other g711, Asterisk would need to
transcode the audio stream as the audio passes through Asterisk. I suspect we
require a g729 licence to do the transcoding

3. SIP/IAX device talks to a TDM device (TDM channel driver installed in
Asterisk)

1.1. SIP/IAX device negotiate g729 and is transcoded into PCM, would we surmise
a g729 licensing is required?

4. A standard extn SIP to SIP call

1.1. SIP extns negotiate g729, the Audio RTP stream is peer to peer therefore
asterisk doesn't care/get involved in the audio encoding, no asterisk g729
license require.

We distribute those for two reasons:

1) We want to cut down on transcoding (if it's even possible for you
to transcode G729)
2) We want you to be able to use G729 even without the G729 module

Most people don't realize you can have a very functional Asterisk
system using G729 without the G729 codec installed. All it takes is a
little configuration. I haven't used a G729 codec on an AstLinux
system in quite some time.
