This would imply that /mnt/kd/asterisk/ does not exist.

When you used "genunion" to create /mnt/kd/ and saw the text:

Did you say "yes" ?

/mnt/kd/ maps to /oldroot/mnt/asturw/mnt/kd/, you should only use /mnt/ 
kd/ to access the files.

If your "genunion" went as expected, the following:

pbx ~ # ls /mnt/kd/
astdb             crontabs          home                        
ssh               voicemail
asterisk          dnsmasq.leases    lost+found        rc.conf
cdr-csv           dnsmasq.static    monitor            
tftpboot          webgui-prefs.txt

(roughly) should appear.
