Eric, I wonder if your CD drive is faulty, as your error rate with EAC seems very high. EAC has found errors on less than 10% of my disks, and less than 1% have many errors or unreadable ones.
Your point is well taken, though. Ripping asynchronously allows the drive to keep re-reading until it gets a good read or until you time it out.
