interesting ... I don't mean to doubt your conclusions ... but could this be a volume/equalization thing? iTunes has its own equalization settings and also has an independent version of volume adjustment which may have different levels as compared with the ReplayGain that is understood by the Squeezeboxen.
Were you comparing the exact same files between the mini and the SB? Have you tried Play or Cog instead of iTunes?
