Mister Pig,
Firstly, performance upgrades. A lot of us use linear regulated power
supplies for our SB3. Many of us have reported improvements using these
(once they  have burned in for a week or two). See mine here:

Secondly, I see you are new to computer-based audio. I am sure there is
going to be a learning curve. Please bear in mind that a lot of this
learning curve is not related to the SB3 particularly. Getting
computer-based audio set up in a way that is FLEXIBLE and avoids
PROPRIETARY LOCK-IN has a certain amount of learning involved that
can't be avoided.
