My $.02 is this...try a decent 75ohm coax cable vs a decent GLASS toslink cable (plastic toslink is the norm, but usually way too rolled off anytime I've heard it). Although I'm going to a modded Transporter soon, my current setup is an SB3 (modded) to a Monarchy DIP Upsampler 48/96 to an Ack Dack. Although the Ack only accepts coax, the Monarchy accepts either (assuming XLR is not in this debate). In my personal situation the glass toslink from an Audiogon vendor captnstarstripe ($30) was better than the any coax I used (Stereovox coax from Monarchy to ACk was constant). YMMV.
Oh, and the Monarchy DIP was quite good and a necessary piece of this setup.
