Have you tried to perform the listening test with unpluging (at the DAC
side) the coax cable while you are listening to the toslink? Given that
most people here claim that they choose the Toslink over the coax and
that a benefit of toslink is isolation, you might not do justice to
your toslink in your test if you keep the coax cable connected, and
therefore the potential effects of the ground loop still affecting the
sound(if ever there is such an effect). 

I myself am wondering what is best for me, and for now I have a cheap
plastic toslink. I used to have a very cheap plastic toslink, but it
might have had an issue since I sometimes lost the signal... The reason
why I didn't go further into (expensive) tests is that I already had
some difficulty to hear a difference between my SB3+toslink and my CEC
drive + XLR AES cable (the cable costing itself twice the price of a
squeezebox). It came as a desapointment regarding my ability to wisely
invest my money and I (temporarily I guess) gave it a break...
