It certainly is possible.

Much depends on the SPDIF transmitter/receiver circuit design. It
doesn't matter what signal is on the wire - it's whether or not it is
possible to make an electrical connection through to the
circuitary/metalwork. Any induced RF etc on either the ground or hot
wires can then cause issues - potentially.

Sometimes isolating impulse transformers are used which ameliorate this
issues - but not always.
