Hello Auronthas,

Room size does play a part in the type and size of speaker. One would
not put Watt Puppy 7s, Thiel 7.2s, or Vandersteen Model 5As in your
room. But 10 X 14 does not rule out Thiel .5 or any 1 series maybe 2
series. The Vandersteen Model 1C would work well with that size room.
After a friend of mine got divorced and had to sell his $50,000 audio
system, he moved into a motel that had been turned into long stay
efficiency rooms then bought a Conrad Johnson PV5, Amber 70 amp,
Meridian CD player, and a pair of Vandersteen Model 1Bs. Imagine a
small motel room only big enough to hold a double bed, dresser, floor
lamp, and corner chair, then make room to shove a kitchenette in there
also. In his small room the system sounded great.

All I am suggesting is to give some other types of speakers a listen to
see if they will work for you. I could be wrong, especially since this
is e-mail, but I get the sense that you have narrowed it down to
Monitors possibly thinking that is all that will work. If you can use a
Monitor Speaker on stands, the Vandersteen Model 1C will work
beautifully. Where my thoughts are going with all this is if you are
considering an $1100 Monitor Speaker plus $300 stands, why not at least
listen to a pair of Thiels or Vandersteens that would have about the
same over all footprint (equal to Monitors with stands), probably sound
better overall, give better bass response, and cost $400 to $600 less!
You would be saving enough to be closer to buying that DAC you are
looking at and then have speakers to take advantage of that DAC. But
again, my opinion is upgrade the speakers first to get more bang out of
your system for the setup you already have, then if you think you can
get more performance with a DAC, go for it, because you have the
equipment in place to take advantage of that improvement. The DAC in
the squeezebox is a very good DAC (not the best, but very good for a
$300 price point unit). It is better then the DAC in all but the
expense Surround Processor and CD Players (granted the SB could use
some better parts between the DAC and the RCAs but that does not mean
the DAC itself is not one of the better ones available).
