The idea that the sb3 is so bad that decent speakers will only reveal its flaws is absurd, IMHO. I run a pair of audio physik tempo 4s off of an sb3 (through an old mccormack power amp). These definitely qualify as at least "very good" speakers. The system sounds fine, and better than it did when the source was my old 2k cd player.
A lavry might make your system sound better, but it wouldn't be cost effective in your system, compared to new speakers (or room treatments). There's no way the sb3 is the limiting factor in this system. You can get a decent pair of speaker stands from parts express for under $120: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=240-744 Have you heard any Dynaudio speakers? The 1.3se was about the best 2-way monitor I've ever heard. They go on audiogon for about 1.5k (a bit above your budget, admittedly). The new audience 53se gets great reviews, although I've never heard it. You might also want to try listening to a couple different pairs of decent powered studio monitors (Genelecs or Dynaudios, maybe). Also if you're thinking about smaller floorstanders that won't overwhelm a smallish room, you might want to consider triangles. -- totoro Perl is the Ron Jeremy of programming languages. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ totoro's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39226 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
