Let me start with; is it just about the money? If you are looking at a
Transporter and an SB3 my thought is it can’t really be about the money
because that is at least 2 grand. So if it is not about the money
(saving it), why do it the hard way?

Here is where I am going. A good sound card with a decent S/PDIF output
is about $250 (Personally, I do not want my audio processor inside the
EMI/RFI hell that is inside a PC) and you still need a DAC ($500 or
more). Sure there is plenty of cheaper stuff, but it sounds like crap
and this whole exercise is no good unless we try to at least stay close
to the good sound from the SB3 (great sound of TP). This covers one
output source and the PC needs to be near the main audio system (read
bad) and completely leaves the other stereo system out of the equation
with no easy solution. Next you could instead buy a USB DAC from $500
to $2000 and run a long USB cable to get further away from the PC. So
yes you do not need Slim Devices, but you need somebody’s devices so
why not get the right ones straight out of the box?! The above
solutions do not get you away from the PC, you have to be at the PC to
select your music and can’t change setting on the fly without being in
front of the PC because “The PC” is the interface.

So the reason you want either two SB3s or an SB3 and Transporter is the
stereo system can be setup anywhere you have Ethernet or wireless
coverage. The NAS can go almost anywhere. One of the SB3s can be used
as a mobile player in and around the home with a pair of powered
speakers as long as it’s in wireless coverage. The music interface is
on the TP/SB and has a remote (not chained to the PC Monitor).
Basically, Slim Devices has all the parts in one box. The music library
interface, the DAC, the data stream processor, it is both the input and
output device the bridge between the PC/NAS and Stereo System, and it
only needs to be near the stereo system. Did I also mention it can be a
wireless Internet bridge to get Internet where you don’t have it for
online gaming and such. A whole lot of bang for the 300 bucks! Guess
what I am saying is that its the Interface that you want from SB3 and
all the user friendly perks.
