And of course the noise level of the source, which is likely
substantially higher than the DAC.  Of course, there's the argument
that the noise level is a broadband measurement, and that it doesn't
completely mask low level events such as reverb tails, etc.  But still,
with 24 bits of precision, there's still a lot of "fudge factor" to keep
the quantization distortion which occurs as a result of the simple
volume adjustment pretty much inaudible at reasonable attenuation.
