No, it doesn't throw away any information providing you have the volume in the 30-100 range. Any reduction in the signal level in the digital domain, will affect the signal to noise level at the DAC, but then so will any subsequent signal reduction in the analogue domain, so it's a question of compromises, and which is the least worst.
