Or put another way, an error could easily be on a MSB bit of a sample, which would result in a loud click. Errors during ripping are quite common, even on scratch free discs, 1:4 discs could have an error (even perfect discs). If the majority of CD drives did not interpolate then many people would be complaining about clicks from rips with WMP or iTunes which are insecure rippers...
