Thanks spoon, this is very interesting info. spoon;331506 Wrote: > I think the majority of modern CDROM drives will interpolate on error, > which is bad for secure rippers as it makes the job of detecting the > errors more difficult (an interpolation is an error).
I am not familiar with too many drives so I can't comment on 'the majority'. However the Philips three beam series of modules, which are among the most popular OEM drives used in audiophile CDPs (and are all plug-compatible) only interpolate in CD-DA mode. From the SAA7324 Datasheet ยง7.7.3: > In CD-ROM modes (i.e. the external DAC interface is > selected to be in a CD-ROM format) concealment is not > executed. Are you saying the majority of drives work differently? This is very interesting, please could you point me at an example datasheet? spoon;331506 Wrote: > A CD Player has to deliver audio in real time, generally data is read at > x1 speed, in comparison a secure ripper on a PC will read at x15 and > retry problem areas, perhaps x100 more than a CD player. Afaik most E32 errors are casued by 'static' conditions such as pit and land length deviations, poor pit geometry etc. that cannot be fixed by rereading. Are you saying that is not the case? Please explain. spoon;331506 Wrote: > Except a secure ripper would inform you had an error (bin that CD, buy a > new one, or repair it), a CD Player would not. Quite true, but I would argue the design goals are different. The CDP is designed to play as many discs as possible, not flag (mostly) inaudible errors. spoon;331506 Wrote: > The majority of CD drives cache audio, internally they know exactly what > the data represents. Again, I am afraid I am not familiar with a broad range of drives. In the application notes for their modules Philips specify that in CD-ROM mode the data must be taken before concealment mute and fade since these functions are only relevant for CD-DA. -- struts ------------------------------------------------------------------------ struts's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14057 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51311
