The point Struts is making is that an audio CD player is designed to
deal with uncorrectable errors by using interpolation to mask them.
Quite often the "repair" is audibly undetectable. A ripper, meanwhile,
keeps trying to re-read the CD and (if the damage is bad) eventually
gives up.

A small number of CDROM drives do have an option to do interpolation
when ripping. I had a Plextor PX712A which could be used in that mode
(but only when using Plextools). The quality of its error concealment
was actually slightly better than a high-end CD player I had
(Micro-Seiki CD-M100). Unfortunately it died a while back, and Plextors
these days seem to be just re-badged "ordinary" drives.
