My observations on the DAC1 falling short were my views on the feature set capability only. I never auditioned the DAC1 - though I was fairly convinced it would be in the running sound quality stakes, purely because it wouldn't do what I wanted feature wise.
My aims were:- a) sound quality as good as or better than the discrete hifi (home built bi-amped + very modded arcam alpha + monitor audio silver speakers) b) reduce the clutter in the living room c) Easy access to all music from lots of places including remote (I am a musician and both listen to and work from music) d) CD (flac streamed) music mainly, radio only occasionally and as background. e) Ability to play a real CD once in a while and ability to plug in an mp3 player for fellow musicians during practice sessions. What it solidified into:- I now have preamp/cdplayer and transporter in the 'TV stack', poweramps are under the floor. Eventually - the preamp will be replaced by a smaller, simpler black box as all it really needs is remote analogue volume. I use duets on other rooms and an old sb2 in the workshop - they are perfect for that. The thoughts and research went:- I first made a mistake by buying an escient fireball as the server/main music source. It was short on features, very quirky and sound quality was a step down from my existing system. I cut my losses and sold it on. I then looked at various ways of getting a good DAC and then linking the analogue 'mp3 musician input' into it. Then discovered the volume control wasn't remote on the DAC and I was worried about losing resolution by controlling digitally only. I then played with softsqueeze set up as a transporter and liked the displays and feature set LOTS. By then I had 2 duets for kitchen and bathroom and thought they were brilliant. Eventually I convinced myself that transporter was the way to go and I have never regretted the decision - it is a perfect fit for my requirements. As I mentioned before - I use the IR remote control with the transporter more than any other means because it is so quick and convenient - better I think than the duet controller. Plugins like musicip and lazysearch make the system an absolute dream. The transporter met those requirements with bells on. It is brilliant - I am a very happy logitech customer. Please note - these are my opinions and may differ from other folks! Hope this helps.
