The more usual way of connecting an unbalanced output to a balanced input is shown in the attached diagram (which I've tried to draw in a similar style to yours). This uses a two-core cable with a common screen (a good quality microphone cable is often used). If hum is a problem, the first thing to try is joining pins 1 and 3 in the XLR (or connecting the screen to the ground at the RCA end). Only if that doesn't solve the hum problem should you then look for other ways of commoning up the ground planes of the SB and power amp.

Since the quote from the wiki was written by me, I should clarify. When I said "connect the SPDIF screen to the mains earth", I was trying to point out that the SPDIF output's screen (if it's unused) is a convenient place to connect up to the SB's ground plane. The mains earth is the one where your balanced power amps have their ground plane connected. Unless there's a fault in your house wiring, then it's safe. Many audio devices (eg. your power amps) have their ground planes connected to the mains earth. +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Filename: xlr.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5944| +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A ------------------------------------------------------------------------ cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53262 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
