If you are using the RCA output on your TP you have built in analog
attenuation in -10-20-30 dB choices for each channel (page 24 in manual
).

For the balanced you can use external passive attenuators to get a
better gain match.
It is a good idea anyway (most amps have to much gain, have you ever
used more than half the volume knob ? ).

But besides all SB products share basically the same well implemented
24bit digital volume control, it is really good .
One could argue that a digital volume is actually better than an analog
one ( i think so, my own preamp uses one ) you get for example perfect
tracking between channels something a potentiometer never achieves.

on 16 bit material you would not loose resolution at all only loose
some tiny amount of SN ratio (in the -10dB example you provided ), it
is even questionable if one looses much on 24 bit sources? 24 bit is
144dB SN ratio, no practical product achieves this in the analog domain
anyway.
And it is a bit of red herring anyway, when you lowered the volume
enough to loose resolution it is to low for you to hear that. possible
exceptions for systems with enormous amounts of gain (they will have
other problems thats swamps this one )

I don't have a TP but according to it's spec it has very low noise

• Signal-to-noise, Dynamic Range: 120dB
• THD+Noise: -106dB (0.00005%)

Your Cary pre has Noise and Hum: -90 dB below full output

So the practical limit of the digital volume in TP, I don't think it is
a problem at all.
If you ask around here there are user who have skipped the preamp
completely and have connected the Transporter or other SB player
directly to the power amp, possible with the aid of some passive
attenuators (recommended practice ) to get a good match to start with.
