Interesting, Phil.

My clearest option is SB3 variable digital out > Beresford DAC fixed
out > Quad 405-2 Power Amp > Speakers.

I don't do it that way because I need to feed the DAC with signals from
a Virgin Cable Box and a TV. Neither has a variable output so I have to
use the analogue volume control on the end of the Beresford DAC.

But the shortest signal path with only a digital volume control yealds
the best results.

(When my Quad 405-2 was refurbished I had the input sensitivity lowered
so I listen in that mode with the SB3 at about 80% or louder (20%
attenuation or less))
