Exactly.

The 24-bit control in the TP/SB3/Receiver is very good. 

This 6dB per bit stuff is all about 16-bit not 24!!!

Don't sweat it. The best sound you will get is to use in-line
attenuators to get the max gain down to a reasonable level and protect
your speakers. Then use the digital level to adjust level for different
listening scenarios. This is waht CliveB advised and in my opinion he is
entirely correct (except for those few power amps that really prefer an
active preamp in front of them...)
