It's true that using a digital volume control results in "sonic
degradation" but there are a couple of points to consider.

1. "Sonic degradation" does not mean "audible degradation".

2. Any volume control results in "degradation" of the signal. The valid
comparison is between a system using digital volume control
_with_no_preamp_ to a system including a traditional preamp in the
signal path. In certain situations (not all) the digital volume control
can be better overall. The key words are "certain situations" and
"overall".
