Go with the SB3. That's what I have for my hifi system. I do use an external DAC but this is not necessary at first. The SB3 DAC is decent but I get somewhat better sound with the external DAC (a Behringer DEQ2496, you can also use a SRC2496 which has the same DAC for about $100 less). Or if you are happy with the SB3 but want a better DAC you could sell the SB3 and move up to the transporter. But the SB3 should be just fine as a proof of concept, you may end up just keeping it, it is certainly good enough.
